Quick Charge: Here’s what happened while you were out.

Sometimes knowing the evolution of a technology helps to explain how we got where we are. 

-Quick Charge 1.0 was introduced in 2012 and it made use of a 5V/2A charger, which could charge a phone up to 40% faster than conventional 5V, 1A chargers. Volts multiplied by Amps = watts, so 5V X 2 Amps accounted for a 10W max charging power.

Qualcomm Quick Charge 1.0 was available on phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S III, LG Nexus 4 and LG Optimus G, the Sony Xperia T and the Redmi2.

-Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 was introduced in 2013 with the Snapdragon 800 chipsets. It made use of a 9V/1.67A charger, which improved on the existing design, by offering up to 75% faster battery topping than conventional 5V, 1A chargers. That accounts for a maximum of 15W charging power (again 9 x 1.67 = 15 watts).

The charging current is adaptive and smartphones can negotiate either regular 5V/2A current or the higher 9V/1.67A current. These chargers are safe for use with regular phones as well. It's up to the phone to determine the charging speed, which is one of the reasons why a more powerful charger does not automatically mean faster charging.

Plenty of the devices support Quick Charge 2.0 (see list below).

To put the technology in perspective, Qualcomm quotes a laboratory test that they've carried out where within a 30-minute charging window a smartphone with a 3300mAh battery would charge the following:

Percent charged in 30 minutes:

  • from 0% to 60% with Quick Charge 2.0 (9 volt/1.67 amp)
  • from 0 to 30% with Quick Charge 1.0 (5 volt/2 amp)
  • from 0% to 12% with a conventional charger (5 volt/1 amp)

Makes a difference when you’re on the run, yes?

-In late 2015, Qualcomm released Quick Charge 3.0. Using the same basic science and technology as they did with Quick Charge 2.0, you'll be able to charge phones using QC 3.0 compatible equipment even faster.

In laboratory tests using a 2750mAh battery, a Quick Charge 3.0 enabled device went from 0% to 80% charge in 35 minutes while a device without Quick Charge 3.0 using a conventional (5 volt, 1 amp) charger achieved just a 12% gain in the same 30 minutes.

It works using what Qualcomm is calling Intelligent Negotiation for Optimum Voltage (INOV). This is a new computational algorithm that allows the device that is being charged to determine the power level it needs at any point in time. That means it's always working with the most efficient and optimized power transfer rate. With Qualcomm 3.0 your phone can dynamically target one of dozens of voltage options using increments of 200 mV, it charges from 3.6V to 20V. 

Quick Charge 3.0 is implemented the same way previous versions were, and all QC 3.0 equipment is fully backwards compatible with Quick Charge 2.0 and Quick Charge 1.0 devices. QC 3.0 supports USB Type-A, USB Type-C and micro USB, as well as proprietary connections. 

What's next?

Quick Charge 4.0 said to have been due out in 2017 has yet to make itself visible to the naked eye. When it does come out, it’s suppose to be 20% faster and 30% more efficient than Quick Charge 3 and runs about five degrees Celsius cooler. Additional “battery saver” features will prolong the life of the battery in your phone, and QC 4.0 is said to be fully USB-C USB-PD (Power Delivery) compliant. And we’ll keep are eye out for it.

We all love faster charging and batteries that live longer. But the last feature in our list is perhaps the most important. 

The latest Android Compatibility Definition Document, Google has strongly recommended manufacturers move away from non-standard USB-C charging solutions like Quick Charge and adhere to the USB-PD spec. 

With QC 4.0, you'll not only be able to extend your phone usage by up to five hours with just five minutes of charging, but won't have to worry as much about matching the charger to the thing being charged.

Additions include real-time thermal management which will regulate the temperature during power delivery to keep things safer and more efficient. New power management ICs are also part of the picture and will come with QC 4-ready devices.
